Phonetic Spelling Generator
Generate sound-out (respelling) phonetic pronunciation for any word — useful for teaching, voice-over scripts, ESL learners, name pronunciation guides, and presentation cue cards. Different from IPA (the international phonetic alphabet) — this uses easier letter sounds anyone can read.

How to use the Phonetic Spelling Generator
Type a single word. The tool applies common English phonetic respelling rules — “tion” becomes “shun”, “ough” becomes “uff”, silent letters get dropped — then splits the result into stressed-syllable groups separated by hyphens, in capital letters. The result is a “sound it out” pronunciation guide that anyone can read aloud.
Pourquoi cet outil est important
IPA (the International Phonetic Alphabet) is the technical standard for pronunciation, but most people cannot read it without training. Respelling — using ordinary letters to suggest sounds, like “kuh-PUH-chee-noh” — works for any English-speaking audience. Use it for difficult names in announcements, ESL teaching materials, voiceover scripts, and presentation notes.
Cas d'utilisation courants
- Voiceover scripts where readers need to pronounce a brand name correctly
- Wedding programs and event announcements where guest names appear
- Customer support scripts for unusual company or product names
- ESL classroom materials
- Podcast intros where guests have hard-to-pronounce names
- Onboarding decks for international new hires
Limits of automated respelling
English pronunciation is notoriously unpredictable — “ough” alone makes seven different sounds (through, though, tough, plough, ought, cough, thorough). No regex-based tool catches every case. Treat the output as a starting draft; always check tricky words against a dictionary or native speaker.
Foire aux questions
Why is the output so different from IPA?
IPA uses special symbols (æ, ʃ, ŋ) that most readers cannot parse. Respelling uses ordinary letters because the goal is “anyone can read this” not “phonetic precision.”
Will it pronounce names from other languages correctly?
Only approximately. The tool applies English pronunciation rules. For non-English names use a native-speaker reference (Forvo, IPA dictionary).
How do I mark stress?
We capitalize all syllables. To mark the stressed syllable, the convention is to capitalize ONLY the stressed syllable and lowercase the rest (e.g., “kuh-PUH-chee-noh”). Edit the output manually for stress marks.
Is there a phonetic alphabet I should use instead?
For deeply technical work use IPA. For radio/aviation use NATO phonetic (Alpha, Bravo). For general pronunciation respelling, our tool is the simplest option.
