AOV is the cheapest revenue lever you have

Winning a new customer is expensive. Adding revenue to an order that is already happening costs far less. A 20% lift in AOV produces the same top-line growth as a 20% lift in customer count, at a fraction of the marketing cost. Bundles, free shipping thresholds, post-purchase upsells and product page recommendations are the standard plays.

How to calculate AOV

Divide total revenue by the number of orders in the same period. Use the same date range for both numbers, and decide whether you include taxes, shipping and refunds, then stay consistent so you can compare months fairly.

Five plays that move AOV

  • Free shipping thresholds: set them a little above your current AOV so shoppers add one more item.
  • Bundles: pair complementary products with a small discount.
  • Post-purchase upsells: offer a one-click add-on right after checkout.
  • Volume discounts: "buy 2, save 10%" works well for low-priced products.
  • Loyalty tier minimums: a reward just above the usual basket encourages a stretch purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Should I track AOV by channel?

Yes. Email, paid social and organic search customers often have very different AOVs. Segmenting by channel shows which channels are worth more per dollar of acquisition cost.

Can a higher AOV hurt conversion rate?

It can, if you push it with higher prices or aggressive minimums. Watch conversion rate and revenue per visitor alongside AOV so a gain in one does not hide a loss in the other.
