AEO services

Get cited where your buyers now ask questions.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the work of making your content the answer AI tools quote. We restructure your key pages so Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search and Perplexity can lift a clear answer, trust the evidence behind it and cite your site.

Quick answer

What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content the most reference-worthy answer to real questions, so AI answer engines quote it and link to it. It builds on SEO, then adds three things: a direct answer near the top of each page, evidence the engine can verify, and a clear entity behind the content. Tarek Riman calls these the Citation Triangle: structure, evidence and entity strength.

  • Works across Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.
  • Measured as citation share on a fixed set of questions.
  • Based on the book Intro to Answer Engine Optimization (2nd Edition).

Who it is for

Teams we usually work with

Mid-market brands

Losing organic clicks to AI Overviews and needing to win back citation share.

B2B teams

Long research cycles where buyers ask AI tools to compare vendors before they ever fill in a form.

SMBs

Ready to move from generic SEO to AEO-led visibility on the questions that bring in customers.

Founders

Launching AI-native businesses where being cited is the main growth channel.

The problem

Why good pages still get skipped by AI

Answer engines pick a few sources per question. Pages lose that spot for reasons you can fix.

  • The answer is buried

The useful sentence sits in paragraph six, after the intro and the brand story. Engines pick the page that answers first.

  • There is no proof

Claims with no source, no date and no named author give an engine nothing to trust.

  • The entity is weak

If the web is unclear about who you are and what you do, engines prefer a source they already know.

  • Nobody is tracking it

Without a fixed list of questions checked every week, you cannot tell whether anything is improving.

Why AEO matters now

The answer comes before the blue link.

AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini now answer many questions directly, with a handful of cited sources shown above everything else.

The brands that get cited capture attention and trust before any classic result earns a click. Without AEO, you are missing from the questions that drive your business.

Our approach

How an AEO program runs, step by step

  1. 01

    Build the question set

We list the 50 to 200 questions that matter to your revenue, using the AEO Query Pyramid, sales calls, support tickets and community threads.

  2. 02

    Run the baseline

Each question is checked in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT Search and Perplexity. We record who gets cited today.

  3. 03

    Find the citation gaps

Your top pages are scored against the Citation Triangle. Where competitors win, we note exactly why.

  4. 04

    Rewrite with APON

Priority pages get answer modules: Answer, Proof, Options, Next step. Short, specific and easy to quote.

  5. 05

    Add evidence and schema

Methodology notes, first-party data, author details, and FAQPage, Article, Person and Organization markup.

  6. 06

    Track and expand

Citation share is re-checked every week. Patterns that win roll out to the next set of pages.

Voice answers

When the answer is spoken, only one source gets heard.

Voice assistants often read a single answer out loud. There is no list of options and often no link on a screen.

That rewards pages that state the answer in plain, spoken language. Write the first sentence so it makes sense read aloud on its own. Avoid tables, symbols and abbreviations in that sentence.

Voice questions tend to be longer and more conversational. Include the full question as a heading, and answer it in the words people say, not the words they type.

  • Answer in the first sentence
  • Plain, spoken wording
  • The full question as a heading

Example scenario

A B2B software company that ranks but never gets quoted

An illustration of how this kind of engagement usually runs. Not a client result.

The company ranks on page one for its main category terms. When buyers ask ChatGPT or AI Overviews the same questions, competitors get cited instead.

  1. The baseline shows the company opens its pages with long intros and hides the answer below the fold.
  2. We rewrite the top 20 pages with APON answer modules and add a short methodology note to each comparison page.
  3. Author bios, Organization schema and sameAs links make it clear who stands behind the content.
What we would measure: citation share on the fixed question set, week over week, and demo requests from pages that gained citations.

Editing for citations

An editing pass that makes a page easier to quote.

Most pages do not need a full rewrite. They need an edit with a few clear rules.

Move the answer to the top. Cut the warm-up paragraph. Replace vague words like many or often with a number and a source where you have one. Keep one idea per paragraph so any passage can stand on its own.

Then read each heading alone. If it does not tell you what the section answers, rewrite it as the question.

The buyer's guide

What to know before you invest in AEO.

AEO is new enough that the words get used loosely. This guide sets out the terms, the traps and how to judge the work.

  1. Key terms, in plain words
  2. What gets a page cited
  3. Common mistakes we see
  4. A quick self-check
  5. What changes the price
  6. What we measure

Key terms, in plain words

Four wooden blocks of decreasing size in a row, each with a different inlay
Answer engine
A tool that replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. Examples are Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.
Citation
A link or source card shown with an AI answer. It tells the reader where the information came from.
Citation share
The percentage of your tracked questions where your site is cited. It is the main AEO metric.
Retrieval
The step where an AI tool searches the web or an index for pages before it writes its answer. Pages that are not retrieved cannot be cited.
Answer module
A short block near the top of a page that answers one question directly, with proof and a next step.
Structured data
Code, usually JSON-LD using Schema.org, that labels what a page contains: an article, an author, an organization, a product.
Query fan-out
When an AI tool splits one question into several related searches and combines the results. Pages that cover follow-up questions get more chances to be used.
Zero-click answer
An answer good enough that the reader does not visit any site. Being cited still builds recognition, even without the click.

What gets a page cited

An AI tool has to trust a claim before it repeats it. Think of evidence as a ladder. Each rung makes a statement easier to verify.

The lowest rung is a bare claim. Above it are a named author, a date, a cited source, first-party data with a method note, and finally independent confirmation from other sites.

Pages that climb a few rungs give the engine something solid to quote. You do not need every rung on every page. Your most important claims should reach the upper ones.

Structure matters too. A clear answer in the first lines, a heading that matches the question and short paragraphs all make a passage easier to lift.

Common mistakes we see

  • Rewriting pages that are not indexed. Answer engines mostly retrieve from pages that are already indexed. Check indexing in Search Console before you rewrite.
  • Adding FAQ blocks everywhere. Generic questions pasted at the bottom of every page add little. Answer the real questions for that page, near the top.
  • Testing once and calling it done. AI answers change from day to day and user to user. Track a fixed question set on a regular schedule.
  • Stats with no source. A number with no origin is hard for an engine to trust. Link the source, or explain how you got your own data.
  • Hiding the author. Anonymous pages give engines less to work with. Name the author and link to a short bio with real credentials.
  • Blocking the search crawlers by accident. Some sites block bots like OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot in robots.txt without meaning to. Check which crawlers you allow.

A quick self-check

What changes the price

  • Size of the question set. Tracking 50 questions takes far less time than tracking 200 across four surfaces.
  • Number of pages to rewrite. Each priority page needs research, a new answer module and an evidence review.
  • Evidence you already have. If you have data, case notes and expert staff, we shape it. If not, it has to be gathered first.
  • Languages and markets. Each language needs its own questions, tests and content.
  • State of the SEO base. Indexing or speed problems have to be fixed before AEO work can pay off.

What we measure

A small stepped pyramid of frosted glass tiles on an oak table
  • Citation share. How often you are cited across your fixed question set, by AI surface. From scheduled manual or tool-based checks.
  • Competitor citation share. Who gets cited when you do not. It shows where the gaps are.
  • AI referral traffic. Visits from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. From GA4 referral and source reports.
  • Conversions from cited pages. Leads or sales from the pages that gained citations. From GA4.
  • Search impressions on question queries. Whether your pages appear more often for question-style searches. From Search Console.
  • Schema validity. Whether your structured data has errors. From validators and Search Console enhancement reports.

How to choose a partner

  • Which questions will you track? A specific list built from your sales calls, support tickets and search data, agreed with you.
  • How do you check citations? A fixed method and schedule, with results recorded in a sheet you can see.
  • How does this connect to our SEO? AEO builds on SEO. A good partner checks indexing and technical health first.
  • What will you change on our pages? Concrete examples of answer modules and evidence, not just schema.
  • Can you guarantee citations? No. AI answers vary. A good partner says so plainly.

FAQ

AEO questions

Still have a question? Ask us directly

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO gets your page ranked in a list of results. AEO gets your content quoted inside the answer itself. AEO builds on SEO, because answer engines mostly cite pages that are already indexed, fast and trusted.

Which AI platforms does AEO cover?

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Perplexity and Gemini. The foundation is the same for all of them. Each one rewards slightly different formats, so we adjust per platform.

What is the APON formula?

APON stands for Answer, Proof, Options, Next step. It is the structure of a short answer module: lead with the direct answer, back it with evidence, show the main options or conditions, then point to the next action.

How do you measure AEO?

We track citation share: the percentage of a fixed set of questions where your site is cited, checked on a regular schedule across each AI surface. We also watch branded search, referral traffic from AI tools and conversions from cited pages.

How long does AEO take?

Pages that already rank can start getting cited within weeks of a rewrite. Building the evidence and entity strength behind a whole topic usually takes a few months.

Do you guarantee citations?

No. AI engines change how they choose sources often, and nobody controls them. We commit to the work that makes citations more likely, and to measuring it honestly.

Can my team learn to do this?

Yes. We run AEO bootcamps and content workshops, and most retainers include training so your writers can produce answer modules on their own.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

No. AEO is about being cited as a source. GEO is about being named as a brand when AI answers without citing anyone. We usually run them together.

Does FAQ schema still help?

It can help machines read your questions and answers. Since 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for a small set of authoritative government and health sites. So add it where the page has a real Q and A, and do not expect a visual change in search.

Do we need an llms.txt file?

It is optional. llms.txt is a proposal, not a standard, and support across AI tools is unclear. It is cheap to add, but clear pages, clean structure and crawler access matter far more.

How long should an answer module be?

Short enough to quote. We aim for a direct answer of two or three sentences, then proof and options below it. The rest of the page can go deeper.

Will AEO reduce our clicks?

Some questions get answered without a click, whether you are cited or not. Being cited keeps your name in front of the buyer. Buyers who do click from an answer often arrive further along in their research.
