Recipe markup for food blogs
Recipe schema tells search engines exactly what your post contains: the dish, the photo, how long it takes, what goes in it and how to make it. Pages with valid Recipe markup can appear as recipe rich results and in Google's recipe carousels, and AI assistants can read the ingredients and steps with less guesswork.
What to fill in
- Required by Google: the recipe name and an image of the finished dish.
- Recommended: author, date, description, prep and cook times, yield, calories, ingredients and instructions.
Type times in minutes. The generator converts them to the ISO 8601 format search engines expect, so 75 minutes becomes PT1H15M, and it works out the total time for you. Each line of instructions becomes its own step.
Everything in the markup should also appear on the page. If your post lists the ingredients, the markup should list the same ones.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I paste the code?
Add it to the recipe post itself. Many WordPress recipe card plugins already output Recipe markup, so check the page first to avoid duplicates.
Do I have to include calories?
No. Nutrition is optional. Only include it if you show the same figure on the page.
Can I add ratings?
Only if real visitors rate the recipe on your page. In that case add an aggregateRating with the true average and count. Never add ratings you made up.
