What Review schema does
Review markup describes a single review: what was reviewed, who reviewed it, the rating and the review text. When it follows Google's rules, it can make a page eligible for review snippets, the star ratings shown under some search results. It also helps AI tools quote your verdict accurately.
Rules worth knowing
- The review must be visible on the page, written by the named reviewer.
- Google shows review stars only for certain item types, such as products, software, local businesses, books, movies, courses and events.
- Reviews a business writes about itself, or posts on its own site about its own services, are not eligible for stars.
- Set the best and worst ratings to match your scale. A 4 on a 10 point scale means something very different from a 4 out of 5.
If a page summarizes many customer reviews, you need an aggregateRating with the real average and count instead of a single Review.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my stars not showing?
Valid markup makes a page eligible, but Google decides whether to show stars. Check that the item type is supported, the review is visible and the markup passes the Rich Results Test.
Can I mark up reviews from Google or Yelp?
No. Only mark up reviews that were collected and published on your own site. Copying reviews from third party platforms breaks Google's guidelines.
Should the reviewer be a person or an organization?
Use Person for individual reviewers and Organization for a publication, such as a magazine reviewing a product.
