Why Open Graph tags are worth setting up

Every link shared in Slack, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, iMessage, X or Facebook turns into a preview card. Without Open Graph and Twitter Card tags, the platform guesses, grabbing whatever heading and image it finds, often with awkward results. With the right tags, you choose the exact title, description and image that represent your page.

The tags that matter most

The core set for every page is og:title, og:description, og:image, og:url, og:type, twitter:card and twitter:image. Get those right and your previews will look correct almost everywhere. Add og:site_name for brand recognition, image width and height so platforms can lay out the card before the image loads, alt text for accessibility, and twitter:site if you have an active X account.

One image size for every platform

An image of 1200 by 630 pixels, a 1.91:1 ratio, works on Facebook, LinkedIn, X large cards, Slack and most messaging apps. Some platforms crop differently, so keep text and logos near the center. JPG and PNG are the safest formats.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I paste these tags?

Inside the <head> section of each page. In WordPress, SEO plugins such as Yoast and Rank Math can output them for you. In Next.js, use the metadata API. In static HTML, paste them straight into the head.

How do I test the preview after publishing?

Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector. They show what each platform sees and let you force a fresh fetch after you change the tags. Our Open Graph Preview Tester gives you a quick look before you publish.

Why does an old image still show after I update the tags?

Platforms cache previews. Run the URL through the platform's debugger and ask it to scrape again to refresh the card.
