After you register a custom dimension, standard reports can take 24 to 48 hours to show data. Explorations pick it up sooner.
How to use the GA4 custom dimension builder
Type the business concept you want to track, such as Subscription Plan. Pick a scope: event (the value can change with each event), user (set once and kept for the user) or item (ecommerce products). Add an example value. The tool gives you the GA4 admin settings, the dataLayer push code and the Google Tag Manager variable setup.
Why custom dimensions matter
Custom dimensions turn GA4 into a report on your own business. Without them you cannot answer questions like "what is the conversion rate of users on the Pro plan?" or "which author drives the most signups?". Naming them well the first time saves a lot of cleanup later, because parameter names live in your code.
Common uses
- Building a dimension catalog for a new GA4 property
- Standardizing tracking specs across teams
- Giving developers a clear first implementation
- Documenting dimension specs
- Rebuilding old Universal Analytics custom dimensions in GA4
Event, user or item scope
Event scope fits values that change from one event to the next. User scope fits traits that describe the person, like plan or customer type. Item scope fits product details inside ecommerce events. If you pick the wrong scope, your reports will group the data in misleading ways.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to register every parameter?
No. Parameters are sent with events either way. Registering a custom dimension lets you use the parameter in standard reports, comparisons and segments.
Why is there a delay before data shows up?
GA4 processes new custom dimensions in batches. Standard reports can take 24 to 48 hours. Data is only collected from the moment you register, not retroactively.
How many custom dimensions can I create?
A standard GA4 property allows 50 event-scoped, 25 user-scoped and 10 item-scoped custom dimensions.
Can I rename a dimension later?
You can change the display name and description. The event parameter it reads cannot be changed, so choose that name carefully.
