Month-over-month growth is volatile but useful

Month-over-month (MoM) growth compares one month to the month before it: (current minus previous) divided by previous. It is the quickest way to see whether a metric is moving in the right direction, and the number most early-stage teams report every month.

A single MoM figure swings a lot with seasonality, holidays and the number of days in the month. Look at three-month and six-month rolling MoM next to the headline number before you draw conclusions.

What the annualized figure means

The annualized rate compounds this month's growth over twelve months. It is useful for sizing a trajectory, but it is theoretical. Very few businesses hold the same MoM rate for a full year, so do not treat it as a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

Should I track revenue or active users?

Track both. Revenue MoM shows cash growth, while active users show product-led growth. They often diverge, and that gap is usually the most useful signal.

What if last month was zero?

Growth from zero cannot be expressed as a percentage. Report the absolute change instead until you have a non-zero base month.

How is MoM different from year-over-year growth?

MoM compares consecutive months, so it reacts fast but picks up seasonal noise. Year-over-year compares the same month a year apart, which removes most seasonality.
