Tag audit

How to use the meta tags analyzer

Enter a page URL and the tool fetches its raw HTML, or paste the source yourself. To copy it, open the page and view the source with Ctrl+U on Windows or Cmd+Option+U on a Mac. The audit lists every key tag with a simple rating: good, worth checking, or needs fixing.

What the audit checks

  • Title tag presence and length
  • Meta description presence and length
  • Canonical link, viewport, robots meta, charset and the HTML lang attribute
  • Open Graph tags: og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url
  • The Twitter Card tag and the number of JSON-LD schema blocks

Why meta tags matter

Meta tags are small, cheap to fix and easy to get wrong. A missing canonical can let duplicate URLs compete. A missing og:image means bare, unappealing share previews. A missing viewport makes the page hard to use on phones. A stray noindex can remove a page from search entirely. One quick audit catches all of these.

Common uses

  • Checking a new page before launch
  • Confirming developers shipped the tags you asked for
  • Comparing your page with a competitor's
  • Finding missing Open Graph tags before a social campaign

Frequently asked questions

Does it read the source HTML or the rendered page?

The source HTML, which is what most crawlers see first. If your site adds meta tags with JavaScript, check the rendered output with a crawler that runs JavaScript.

What if a URL will not load?

Some sites block automated requests. Open the page in your browser, copy the source and paste it into the Paste HTML tab instead.

What is a good title length?

Roughly 30 to 60 characters. Google cuts titles by pixel width, so very long titles usually end with an ellipsis, and very short ones leave useful words out.
